Dec. 2, 1954
The U.S. Senate votes to censure Sen. Joseph McCarthy for conduct unbecoming of a senator and for abuse of a Senate committee that looked into his financial affairs two years earlier. This period of suspicion coupled with his brand of attack on those he called communist sympathizers was dubbed McCarthyism. In recent years, some conservatives have attempted to rehabilitate McCarthy's reputation, arguing that liberal critics of the Wisconsin Republican were communist sympathizers who attacked him out of fear of getting caught in his nets.
