A glorious summer of fun in the sun is right around the corner and that can only mean one thing — it's time for a new pair of sunglasses! They offer essential protection from the sun's harmful rays, and they are a surefire way to jump-start your summer style. Whether you want to go glamour-girl chic, sporty, urban or incognito a la Angelina Jolie, the best sunglasses for you are right here in this edition of The Trend Report!

Glam-o-rama

Every trendista knows that glamour girl sunglasses are a woman's best friend. Imagine your favorite screen goddess from the '40s or '50s in her ultra-chic frames, and you'll see what we mean — they hide everything from too little sleep to too much fun and make you look stunning at the same time. Black or tortoiseshell frames in movie star shapes are a classic, but for a fashion boost, spring for a pair in a pretty color like coral, pink, blue or white.

Trend tip: The trendiest glamour girl sunglasses have “signature” insignias on the temples — everything from butterflies to daisies!

'70s chic

The '70s are hotter than ever in fashion land, and the “it” sunglasses of the moment can be found in the new '70s-inspired collection by Tom Ford. You've seen them on everyone from Nicole to Paris — chicly oversized translucent frames, often with those gradient lenses that “time stamped” so very many graduation photos. Each pair is named for a style icon, so you can't go wrong!

Trend tip: While the look of these sunglasses is vintage, the 100 percent UV/UVB protection isn't. Beware of picking up a pair of vintage frames to get the look, as they will not offer modern sun protection for your precious eyes.

Sports girl

Sunglasses that are performance enhancers aren't just for professional basketball players anymore! If you enjoy running, biking, golf, tennis or any number of outdoor sports, you must check out the latest advances in sports-style sunglasses for women. First of all, they're as pretty and sleek as you desire, but the designs also offer extended peripheral vision, protection, comfort and stability. Get in the game!

Trend tip: You'll find polarized lenses that sharpen the contrast between grass and ball (if you're a tennis or golf girl), reduce glare on hills (for hikers or bikers) and other specialized needs. Cool!

City slicker
If your taste runs to sleek and chic modern style, then you will love the latest “citified” spin on aviator-style sunglasses. Always a classic, but this summer they've been elevated to an art form with new design treatments — you'll find laser-cut lenses that make the frames themselves a thing of the past as well as unexpected combinations of metallic frames and colored lenses. Both give this traditional standby a brand new twist.

Trend tip: One of the trendiest looks are oversized aviator-style sunglasses with brightly colored resin frames — another '70s flashback that is so summer 2006!

Isaac Mizrahi at Target.com

Incognito

In the rarified world of celebrity style, the major function of a pair of sunglasses is to help the paparazzi-stalked star escape “incognito” — as if wearing a huge pair of ultra-stylish shades would actually make Angelina Jolie unrecognizable! In any case, this practice has turned dark, enormously oversized sunglasses into must-have fashion items. You can get the look — even if you don't have a celebrity-sized budget — with a pair of the fabulously stylish sunglasses offered by Isaac Mizrahi at Target!

Trend tip: Downsize these beauties a notch or two and you'll have a perfectly normal, perfectly classic pair of sunglasses.
