CHINA DEALS

China signed deals to buy U.S. airplanes, software and farm goods, hoping to ease tensions over the country's $202 billion trade surplus with the United States. The $16 billion in deals, which were announced in April, are listed below:

Aviation
China bought 80 Boeing Co. 737 jets worth around $4 billion. Boeing is battling Europe's Airbus for dominance in China's aviation market, one of the world's fastest growing.

Software
With the United States complaining that Chinese piracy of software costs companies billions of dollars a year in lost revenue, China agreed to buy $1.7 billion in computer software.

China's Lenovo Group Ltd. reaffirmed an earlier agreement worth $1.2 billion over one year to pre-install Microsoft Corp.'s  Windows operating system on Lenovo's computers made in China.

Three other Chinese PC makers signed similar deals with Microsoft worth about  $400 million.

Database maker Oracle Corp. signed a multimillion-dollar deal with China's biggest mobile telephone service provider, China Mobile Ltd.

China's Ministry of Information Industry, which regulates the technology sector, also began requiring Chinese computer makers to preload legal software on their machines.

Technology
China said it entered a $1 billion deal with electronics manufacturer Flextronics.

China agreed to tweak rules limiting equity investment in its telecommunications sector, which has been largely closed to foreign participation.

Beijing also pledged to remove barriers on the sale of U.S. medical equipment.

Agriculture
A Chinese delegation visiting Chicago bought nearly 5 million metric tons of soybeans and 20,000 metric tons of soyoil, and further purchases of goods such as cotton and poultry are expected.

China also agreed to conditionally allow imports of U.S. beef, a sticking point with American farmers who are eager to tap the country's rising appetite for meat.
