Evidently success on “American Idol” requires somewhat more than just singing.

Even churlish Simon Cowell said Mandisa had great pipes. But that didn’t stop her from tumbling out of the competition Wednesday night.

It didn’t seem fair. And for the most part, readers thought so too.

A sampling of feedback from the April 5 episode of “American Idol.”

SHOCKER
I was shocked. No, Mandisa did not deserve to get voted off. Maybe Paris needed this to wake her up a bit. She was not very good last night either. Elliott has a great voice and didn't deserve to be in the bottom three either. Best of luck to Mandisa, she has an amazing voice and deserves the best. – LeAnn

BIG SURPRISE
Wow! Mandisa was a great voice. It was a big surprise to see her leave the competition so early. I hope her exposure on "Idol" helps her keep on going on! – Brian

WHY WATCH?
With Mandisa gone there is no reason to watch. She had personality, voice, and she was entertaining! – Karen

KELLIE LOVE

I am surprised Mandisa got voted off. She is the best all around singer in the competition. She was also the most consistent singer in the competition. I only remember one off night for her. Country is not her area, but she still is the best singer. The next two best are Kellie and Paris. America will pick Kellie, because America loves her even if she messes up. – Antonio

YOUNG ARETHA
Mandisa is like a young Aretha Franklin, a powerful voice and range, but country isn't her best area. I had to try several times to vote for her, because all I got was dead air when I put in her number. If that happened all over the country she could have lost many votes that way. She should not have been voted off. – Abigail

BUCKY BACKER
Yes, Mandisa deserved to go home. Now send phony Pickler home. Bucky Covington does fine. He seems like a genuine, nice person. One without attitude. Not so with many of the other contestants. A pleasure to see someone get up there and smile and sing and look happy to be there. We never heard much about him whereas others were shown in TV clips and so on all the time. Not fair. – Marie

UNDESERVED
Mandisa's departure was shocking and undeserved. The idea that Ace and Bucky and even Katharine should be safe while three of the most talented performers stood in the bottom three was appalling. Loyal fans like myself voted for Mandisa, Paris, Taylor, Elliott and Kellie until we couldn't dial anymore. Tonight was one of those nights we could only weep. – Diana

POPULARITY CONTEST
Mandisa probably had the best voice of any of the finalists. Unfortunately this is a popularity contest at this point and talent may even be irrelevant. It really is time for a new voting process. – Scott

FIXED
I personally think the show is fixed. If it wasn't fixed, then why don't they publish the numbers on the results each week? That is the only way I will believe who is voted off each week. – Mary Ellen

KELLIE WINS
It sucked raw eggs. After all the bad days the other contestant had, she should not have been the one to go. Yes, I was surprised at Paris position as she too has real talent. Elliot should outlast Buckey. Kellie wins – James
