For the first time in U.S. history, Congress decides the outcome of a presidential election. Four candidates campaigned during the 1824 presidential race. When the electoral votes came in, John Quincy Adams and Andrew Jackson were in the lead, but two other candidates had enough votes to prevent either man from winning the necessary majority. According to the 12th Amendment, the House of Representatives would have to decide between the front runners. Adams prevailed, thanks in large measure to support from House Speaker Henry Clay.
