42 songs compete for Oscar

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. - Carly Simon, Barenaked Ladies and 50 Cent are competing for an Oscar, and they don’t even know it yet.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has released its list of the 42 songs being considered for the best original song Oscar. The list will be whittled down to five final choices, which will be announced January 31st.

Simon’s song “Shoulder to Shoulder” from “Pooh’s Heffalump Movie,” is under consideration. So are Barenaked Ladies for “One Little Slip” from “Chicken Little” and 50 Cent’s song “I’ll Whip Ya Head Boy” from “Get Rich or Die Trying.”

Other artists with movie songs under consideration are Fountains of Wayne, Leigh Nash of Sixpence None The Richer, Bryan Adams, Polyphonic Spree, Sting, and members of Radiohead.
